The recent fires in Kenya. Kenyans are crying their hearts out at the loss of their beloved in two fire tragedies, the Nakumatt fire and the Nakuru/Molo tanker fire. Both terrible. To think about how those who found themselves in the midst of these two raging infernos felt, is a shuddering thought. The only consolation being that there is a God and He is Just and Fair and the Ultimate Compensator and He will know just what to grant those departed souls to make them forget their pain. So for those Kenyans whose hearts suffer, have faith, God is great and He will compensate where compensation is due.

Inside there is a cemetary – also Kiziwi area
Khoja Tudor mosque and sign for Rassini road. Rassini road - holds mixed childhood memories for me.
Down rassini road pic 1. Down this road are many beautiful houses owned by some of Mombasa’s elite. I would often walk down this road when I was a kid, I used to live nearby at the time. I would admire these houses and imagine what it would be like to live in them but somehow the idea was not appealing to me. I’m not a house person. Houses to me seem to hold depths of desolation, away from society, some distance between your neighbours. You are all alone with your family in a big nice house, nice garden and quiet surroundings. Its dull ! I like flats, specially those overlooking roads. You don’t even need a TV. You can just watch the comings and goings of everyday people on the road. People in groups chattering away, solitary persons on their cellphones, children playing, goats grazing. Downstairs a kid screams, his irate mum curses, your next door neighbour has the TV on loud and yet another neighbour has a radio on equally loud. Knocks on your door, its the ‘mama mbogas’ come to sell veggies, mkokotenis pass by announcing their wares, cars pass on with loud local music. Its life, just ordinary life where your neighbour’s door is only a meter away, where any arguments in your flat can be heard by all those living nearby, where a wrong word or a wrong move sends a wildfire of gossip round the entire neighbourhood and where out of rare boredom, one can spark off excited gossip by intentionally making a wrong move and watch with amusement the resulting hushed whispers and furtive looks
Yes its definately flats for me !!
Down rassini road pic 2. You can see various gates of various houses. Didn’t take pics of any of the houses for fear of being accused of planning a robbery !

OMG love love love your depiction of life in an apartment building in Mombasa! So accurate! *giggle*
